Heavy Fog Causes Chain-Reaction Highway Crash in San Antonio Involving Multiple 18-Wheelers

Interstate 37 in San Antonio, Texas was shut down this morning following a domino-effect crash that involved two 18-wheeler trucks and about 20 passenger vehicles.

According to reports, the wreck took place Wednesday morning around 8 a.m. on Interstate 37 near Old Corpus Christi Road, on the northbound side of the highway. San Antonio Police Department officials stated that the wrecks started due to low visibility in the heavy fog covering the region. Officials also stated that several vehicles were going faster than the speed limit.

Within the entire pileup, there were about 4-5 individual crashes that took place, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Several people were reportedly injured at the scene. Emergency officials had trouble navigating the roadway due to the chaos at the scene, so several injured people were simply lying on the side of the road as they waited for medical assistance. Some people were treated at the scene of the accident, and others were transported to local hospitals via EMS. No life-threatening or fatal injuries were reported.

Ultimately, TxDOT officials closed the intersection between Loop 1604 and Interstate 37 in order to prevent more crashes. The National Weather Service had issued a dense fog warning, as visibility was reduced to about a quarter mile. The dense fog covered a stretch of South Texas for over 90 miles.
