Semi-Truck Driver Killed in Highway Crash in Tacoma, Washington

The unidentified driver of an 18-wheeler truck was killed Thursday after a crash on Interstate 5 in Tacoma, Washington.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the 18-wheeler truck was driving north just before noon when it hit a box truck near 72nd street. This crash started a chain reaction of crashes that involved four total vehicles. In the midst of the series of crashes the 18-wheeler drifted across the highway and struck the median barrier, causing the trailer to detach and strike the cab where the driver was.

Several people were injured inside the box truck and other two passenger vehicles involved in the wreck, though numbers are not yet clear. Reports indicate that these injuries were non-life-threatening.

Most of the highway was shutdown in both north- and southbound directions for about 5 hours.

Investigators have not yet released an official explanation as to what they think caused the wreck to occur.
