Truck Driver Pedro Alvarez Killed when Two 18-Wheelers Crash at Railroad Crossing

Pedro Alvarez, 54, was killed last week when he ran his 18-wheeler truck into another 18-wheeler.

The crash took place on US Highway 90 near Lafayette, Louisiana. According to State Police, a Freightliner commercial truck was stopped at a railroad crossing in the outside westbound lane of Highway 90. At this time Alvarez, driving a second 18-wheeler, ran into the back of the trailer of the stopped truck.

At the moment of impact, the contents of Alvarez’s trailer quickly shifted forwards and tore into the cab of his truck. The Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Alvarez dead on the scene. The driver of the first stopped truck sustained minor injuries, and was sent to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

At this time it is unclear why Alvarez didn’t stop for traffic at the railroad crossing. Toxicology tests for both drivers are currently pending as the crash is being further investigated.
